My stomach is growling just thinking about this place. I really miss going here! They season their ground beef to perfection. It's so yummy. I usually get the taco with ground beef, one with pork, and one fish. They are so good. And the salsa is made in house and its awesome too! My hubby usually gets the San Diego Burrito. It has fries in it. And they can deep fry it for you. It's amazing.

Oh, Taco King. My once passionate love. I used to pick up dinner here multiple times a week. There used to be a really sweet, friendly guy who worked the counter. He, however, has since left for brighter horizons, and in his place are the surliest, unhappiest counter workers ever. I used to leave jar tips every time I visited, to no avail, because these are the crankiest men in the world we're talking about here, and that kind of shittiness cannot simply be bribed away. Last time, after the usual surliness, he sold me expired chorizo one entire month out of date (from the grocery section, my fault for not looking at the date of the food they had for sale I guess!). They either changed the recipe or sell the same month-long expired chorizo in their counter food, because even the restaurant tacos started tasting spoiled and wrong. After three or four serious and increasingly expensive disappointments, this former enthusiastic regular will not be going back. Also, they've got 3 different websites to order that don't even contain the same menu items, which is just damn annoying.

No disrespect to them personally because I like their sign as well as their outdoor seating option but I took a bite of a Taco King taco once and was immediately like "What the fuck?" It tasted like shit. I probably won't be back to Taco King in this lifetime.

Taco King is royally delicious and deserves some recognition. It's tucked away into the same plaza as Hello Faz and serves as a latin grocery store as well. The place has no frills, but doesn't skimp on flavor or quantity. They have an all vegetarian section of the menu, which makes life easier - and yes they have vegetarian beans and rice. The tostadas and smothered burrito are my favorite things on the menu, but their roasted veggie tacos are really good too. I'll be back at Taco King for sure. While they have eat in seating, I prefer take out from here. The staff is friendly and they have a good selection of beverages in the refrigerators too.

This place has changed dramatically. Gone are the friendly owners and staff; along with the excellent tacos. Seem to have been replaced by some grumpy owners that barely say a word to any of the customers and the food is not even close to what it was. Grocery selection is still strong.

Good burrito, odd tamale, and frustrating service. Stopped by for some Mexican groceries and a dinner to go; I asked if the food would be 5-10 minutes, and the guy at the counter said 5. 10 minutes later, the food showed up in the window and the cook hit the order-up bell; then rang it again, and again. After five minutes I convince the guy at the counter to reach behind him and hand me my food. If they'd said 15 min I would have run another errand; if they'd given me my order at 10 minutes, it'd be fine --- but staring at my rapidly-cooling order for five minutes definitely set my teeth on edge. The veggie burrito turned out fine; cheese was a little clumpy and black beans were firmer than I usually cook them myself, but the overall package worked well. The central-American tamale was wrapped in a banana leaf; it was fairly oily, and was filled mostly with canned green beans. Found a few carrot cubes as well --- was this the same mix I used to get as a veggie side in my school lunch? Burrito was acceptable, but I doubt I'll be back.

Ordered delivery from this place last night. I asked for a chipotle chicken taco, and they gave me regular chicken for whatever reason....it was pretty flavorless, just a bunch of plain chicken thrown in with some greens. no sauce. I also got guacamole, which was THE most flavorless guacamole i have ever had. It tasted like plain, mushy paste...wouldnt even be able to tell it was guacamole if i had my eyes closed. I lived in California my entire life and moved here two and 1/2 years ago, I must say that the quality of mexican food here is absolutely terrible compared to California. I can't seem to find a single place that can make it authentically and with loads of flavor. Disappointing.

The folks here are friendly but often take a *long* time to bring the food out. I've also had the rare odd tasting burrito, which I was ok shrugging off until I saw they failed a heath inspection recently. Not going back. a2docs.org/doc/389

I thought moving away from my San Diego, CA home meant I would ever have good Mexican food again. I held on to hope. I searched high and low, failing time and time again. Today, I stumbled into the Latin American grocery store to try to find good tortillas so that I could at least attempt to satisfy my burrito desires. Then, like a beacon of hope, I saw that menu. Then I saw a burrito menu. Then I saw the San Diego burrito, and I heard the heavenly choirs. Back home, we call them California burritos, but San Diego burrito makes me even happier. I ordered, trying not to get my hopes up because I didn't want to face another crushing disappointment. I smelled the carne asada cooking. It smelled right. The minutes ticked by. To many people, waiting 10 minutes would be a bad thing, but I know good burritos take time. He handed me that styrofoam takeout box. I opened it. It looked right. The hot sauce looked quality. I took a bite and made a sound I have never heard myself make before- somewhere between a cry, a scream and a relieved sigh. I was home. For 10 minutes as I downed that burrito, I was home. If you want authentic Mexican food, this is your place. Granted, I haven't tried anything else yet; this was my first experience. But honestly, even if I go back and am less than thrilled with other menu items, I don't even care. California burritos are what make me homesick, and now I have them. Thank you, Taco King. You will see me again. I will be your Burrito Maiden.

Was a little confused upon entering that Taco King is just an extension of a grocery store, but after I sat down, that added a bit of quirky charm. It took a bit of time to order because the guy at the register was taking a complicated phone order, but the service was very friendly, and the food was really good! The bf got a taco salad with tripe (yum!), which was more food than it looked like. It came with tortilla chips, too! I got three vegetarian tacos: King Taco (yum!), Mushroom, and Potato (really just chopped up French fries). The potato taco I could have done without, but the other two were great! Hoping to return soon to try more menu items!

Had Taco King for the first time and really liked the quality of the food and the prices. The crunchy tacos are my favorite and they were really good!! I had the pastor and asada tacos. The pastor gets a little mark down in my book as there is pineapple in with the pork which I don't really care for and can't have due to some prescription reaction issues but the flavors were good. I also ordered some chips which were cheap and freshly made and had a really nice roasted corn taste! I'll be back soon!!

I first stumbled upon this little gem while ordering Online from GrubHub after becoming an ista-fan of them because of my quesadilla I decided to grab the boyfriend and head to the actual place a couple days later. Like others, we were a little confused upon entering that Taco King is just an extension of a grocery store, but I think that added a bit of authentic charm. My only gripe with the location is that it was hot as balls inside... We got about a dozen tacos and loved pretty much all of them...but again the quesadilla rocked my socks It was quirky, authentic, and even if it took some time and was hot and uncomfortable the food was pretty darn awesome. We will be back!

The restaurant has been inside Tienda La Libertad for some time, but recently has decided to branch out and have their own identify. I have been to Taco King twice now and tried almost all of their taco's. You can order at the counter or grab a table and someone will come to you to take the order... the taco's are only $1.50 and three should be sufficient for one person, but if you are really hungry, get four. I order Al Pastor, Carnitas and Carne.... these are my favorites... I had their lamb taco... it tastes almost like beef... my friends had the beef tongue... I prefer to stay with meats that's not from inside the animal :) They have two kinds of salsa - red and green... the red is the hotter of the two... the guacamole is excellent. I usually get the 16oz with the chips and it'll be all gone by the time I done.... I had their tamales, they have two kinds... one made with banana leafs and the other the traditional corn husk... both were good... couldn't tell the differences in taste, the banana leaf costs's more. As for drinks, I go with the Mexican soda pop... I only get the pineapple, but some day will try the other flavors!

this is a swag factory. they make some of the most badass burritos, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. they accommodate my weirdo vegan lifestyle and make my burrito just how i want. i get the veggie burrito with no cheese or sour cream, add guac, and add grilled mushrooms... i swear it's like steak strips. the jamaica is out of control. the roasted tomatillo salsa is out of control. definitely THE SPOT.

If you've read my profile, you know I love me a good taco. So, I was absolutely delighted to see that Taco King has online ordering & delivers. I've ordered from them twice, & so far I have been very pleased. The tacos are good. They're not "as long as this flavor remains in my mouth, I will never eat another thing" good, but they're a good, solid taco. Outside of tacos, the burritos are bigger than some Chihuahuas, & most of their portioning is overkill. But, that just means there's more for later, right? So, If you're looking for a decent taco & you don't want to have to put on pants & leave the house, go online & order from Taco King - good Mexican food plus delivery, & you don't even have to talk to anyone to order it! Sometimes lazy taco days are the best days.

I used to frequent Taco King. I work near it and they do have good food. Unfortunately they have several downfalls that I cannot look past. First, it is dirty. There are tons of flies, they don't have proper ventilation so they leave the front and back doors open. This last time I went there, there were flies and also many bees, alive and dead. Not exactly the environment I want my food prepared or consumed. Second, the employee who "helped" us did a less then desirable job. When we arrived he was on the phone taking an order, he did not even look at us and his demeanor on the phone was very clipped and rude in my opinion. When he was off the phone we started to place our order and the phone rang again. He proceeded to answer and begin to speak to the person and complete our transaction at the same time. I would have expected him to answer and put the caller on hold, complete our transaction, then help the person on the phone. Here is the thing that makes my experience unforgivable. When our food came, as he was setting my plate in front of me, a piece of quesadilla fell on the floor. He picked it up with his bare hands and stretched it out to me, then says "would you like a replacement?" my husband said, yes please make another one. The employees takes it back to the kitchen and comes back thirty seconds later with a piece of quesadilla wrapped in deli paper. We compared it to the other pieces and my husband and I determined that it was the same piece that fell on the floor. I was in complete shock! Was this guy for real? When we left we cleared our table of everything except for that sad, floor piece of quesadilla hoping to send him the message "yeah, we are not stupid. We know you tried to fool us with your nasty, handled, floordilla. It didn't work". I will never go to taco king again.

Taco king rocks.. I've become addicted to there steak quesadilla, burritos and tortas. Churros are fantastic as well.. So is the hot sauces. Curiously their tacos are kinda meh. I usually go for asada or marinated pork but their meat options are plentiful, just order online and expect a bit of a wait for your food which is totally worth it.. Protip: when you're waiting for your order go to their grocery store and get some of the Mexican "fud" sour cream to slather on everything..it's glorious.

  • Libby S.

I'm torn here, because I do like most of the food and the prices are great. The fried burrito and the churros are delicious, but I agree with other reviewers that the chicken is totally flavorless. The biggest problem is the service - it sucks. Every single time I order delivery they forget something, usually the drink. The driver says they'll "bring it right back," and it is 30-60 minutes before it shows up and I'm done eating already. Also, the food arrives cold. Every time. When we pick up the food it is better, but the staff is surly and rude. I was 30 minutes passed my pick-up time once and they reported me to grubhub. They are NEVER ready on time. I hope they get their act together.

In principle, I believe in taco democracy, and support the eventual abolition the taco monarchy in favor of a taco republic (or, at least, a constitutional taco monarchy, in which the taco sovereign has only ceremonial taco authority). However, it is sometimes said that a benevolent taco autarch, wielding the ruthless efficiency that his position grants, can enact rapid and considerable advances in taco society and overall taco well-being. I think it's fair to say this Taco King has done exactly that. The Taco King has, of course, fulfilled the responsibilities of his title by providing a plethora of delicious taco options to his subjects (in particular, the Taco King's mastery of Chorizo is one of his greatest accomplishments.) However, beyond the simple taco, he has also bestowed upon all of us a wide array of wonders, including fantastic wet burritos and chimichangas, and a truly epic pile of deliciousness known as the "taco salad". For all of these reasons, I shall happily compromise my core taco beliefs and shout 'Long Live the Taco King!'

I love this spot because it reminds me of the bodegas back home in Brooklyn. Need incense, candy peanuts, a prayer candle, ramen, a quart of milk, phone card and lunch? We gotcha covered. You might avoid this place because it's not typical Ann Arbor but you should definitely check it out. The food is more authentic than most places in town and is dirt, dirt cheap. Things are a bit spicy which works for me but not for K and N - just ask about the sauces before dumping them on your food. The menu is limited but still offered enough opportunities to get your Mexican fix and despite the name, there's more than just tacos. The chili relleño is really different than the ones I'm used to - flatter and with only cheese inside and no fried outside. I stuff mine with a mix of corn, rice, beans and sometimes neat, pour on cheese and back them. Prickly Pear and other places deep fry them. Definitely worth a taste. If you want quick, cheap Mexican eats and are on the west side, this is your place.

First off, I lived in San Diego for almost 10 years so my mexican food standards are extremely high. Let me just say this place rocks! They have what they call a San Diego Burrito on there menu which is actually called a California Burrito in Southern California, either way its friggin amazing, and there Fried San Diego Burrito is an even better spin on something that was already delicious. There carne asada is very lean and flavorful, and there salsa is delicious as well. They also have an excellent selection of ethnic foods and goods. Best selection of Yerba Mate in town!

  • Amy L.

Food is great- truly... Get the quesadilla with Campechana. HOWEVER- must give 2 stars due to one major flaw: beware delivery. Not only does the order take twice as long to arrive as they quote you (minimum), they frequently mess up the items contained therein.

  • Andrea G.

Ordered a couple tacos, the chicken tasted really dry and the intestine tasted like its not been cleaned well,i took one bite and spat it out. Husband ordered a burrito and it fell apart before he started eating it, he had to use a fork to eat it out of the plastic basket. It just looked really disgusting. The outdoor sitting area is next to a giant dumpster. Not going back ever. If you find yourself in the area,go to Pilar's across the parking lot,its wayyy better than this crap.

I am writing an update because I got food there yesterday and I was a little disappointed. So I am knocking my 5-star review down to 4-stars. One of my favorite things on the menu is (was?) the torta with marinated pork, but since the last time I ordered it, they now put lettuce, tomato and almost 1/2 an onion on it. Weird. Seriously, so much onion that no one in their right mind would want to eat that. I am only guessing that they did that so they wouldn't have to put as much meat on it. There was very little meat once I removed the tomato and onion, and I couldn't believe I paid $6.50 for that flat and dinky sandwich. I still enjoy the food in general but will modify my orders in the future. Also, yes this place is HOT in the summer, get ready to sweat.

  • Martin S.

Kind of a questionable looking hole in the wall joint, but I heard good things about the place so I tried it out. The Al Pastor tacos, salsas, and guacamole were very good. I cannot recommend the rice, beans, or steak tacos. Steak tacos were dry. Rice and beans were undercooked and luke warm.

  • Tomas G.

Mexican food expert here (I.e. 29 years of experience eating/cooking Mexican food) By far the worst chilaquiles I have ever had. San Diego burrito is ok. Chips and guac are delicious. Their horchata tastes kinda funny. Salsa is good. Service is okay. Shop is cool.

I found myself here after originally wanting to go to Pilar's, which for some reason was closed for a few days. I wouldn't expect much from a place with a silly name like Taco King, but they have have some legit tacos. I only had the fish and vegetarian tacos, but I'll be coming back to try more items on the menu.

  • Tyler S.

Unfriendly, and I didn't get exactly what was on the menu. (Normally that'd be fine if someone had explained the situation to me. Communication, people!)

Had lunch here for the first time, and it was delicious! When you walk in, they are very friendly, and there is a market attached to it. It's convenient, because while you wait for your food, you can shop! The food was very authentic, and a great price for the quality. I will definitely come back!

I had high hopes for this place because it's much closer to home than TMaz or Chela's (which I haven't visited but have heard it's good). I was incredibly disappointed. I tried a pastor taco, pork tamale wrapped in banana leaf, and chile relleno with cheese. The pastor taco was okay, just a little bland. The texture and taste of the tamale and chile relleno were not good at all. Each was a bit too moist and lacked flavor. Even the small guacamole side tasted like it was made with bad avocados. I'll stick with TMaz.

  • Andres B.

The taco war is on! Shortly after visiting nearby Chela's, I noticed Taco King offering nearly identical dinner options at similar prices. It has a much more authentic feel, considering it's part of La Tienda Libertad (Hispanic grocery store that's quite awesome), and prepares it's tacos similarly. I ordered the 2 taco, rice and beans combo at an astounding price of $5. Rice and beans were better than Chela's for sure, but no one comes here for that. Taco's were delicious; less finely chopped onions, but familiar ingredients and preparation. However, in the end Taco King gets 4 stars and Chela's gets 5 because for me, the homemade salsas at Chela's elevates their tacos one star above. I still highly recommend, because in the end there's no other place to buy plantain chips and get a $5 meal that's actually made with fresh ingredients.

Good nachos but when they say 15 minutes it means 40. They also don't have air conditioning for your extremely long wait.

My husband and I stopped in looking for a hard to find ingredient, and decided to try something from their menu. We were definitely disappointed. We both got tacos and both agreed that the tortillas and meat were chewy and tasted old. On the other hand, we found what we were looking for in the grocery, and the employees were friendly and helpful when we asked questions.

    (2)
  • Lou S.

Finally tried the Taco King. It was good traditional tacos. The braised pork was very tender meat (4 stars). I would not recommend the chorizo or chicken. The tacos are not heavily seasoned meat so you will need to add salsa (homemade). I also tried the tamale but would not recommend (too much corn and not a lot of meat). We did not try a burrito. We just got back from 2 weeks in Calf. and ate many traditional tacos, the tacos at Taco King for comparison were average (not bad but not the best). If you're hungry for traditional tacos and nearby, I would recommend Taco King but wouldn't drive out of the way to eat there.

Their food is delicious. However, their sucky customer service disgusts me. I work at a busy hospital, and I have a 30 minute lunch. I usually order about an hour and a half in advance of when I go to lunch. The first two times I ordered from them, they were about 15 minutes late, that's half my lunch. I was upset. Today, I ordered from them for the last time. Not only did they give our food (a few coworkers ordered with me) away to someone else, they blamed us for their mistake, and refused to take personal responsibility for their actions. The delivery driver lied and said that I had gotten my food, when she gave it to the wrong person. They offered no form of recourse, other than remaking our food and bringing it back. When they did, they got our order wrong. I ordered the Quesadilla special, and I only received the Quesadilla. I ordered two supreme fish tacos on flour tortillas with hot sauce. They sent Verde sauce, and put them on corn tortillas. When I called about the order mess up, I was threatened with a camera (whatever that means). They should've offered us some kind of discount, or at the least, they could've offered us free delivery. Needless to say, I will NEVER order from them again. Their customer service is HORRIBLE. No matter how delicious their food is, that doesn't make up for their crappy customer service! You've been warned!!

Meh.... the food is good and reasonably priced however it's not much better than other area taquerias. This place is so slow and dysfunctional it is not worth it. It took a half an hour to get two tacos to go. If your a self important yuppie who has just discovered Mexican street tacos, this is a great place to feel like your living on the edge. Me? I'll pass and you can have this all to yourself.

I moved to A2 from Chicago in 2000, and this place reminds me of those little taco shops I used to go to in Wicker Park in the 90's. They have a great marinated lamb taco, although the pork (Al Pastor) is the one I would recommend for sure. You can get a mexican coke with real sugar in the cooler and take it to go. They also have a handy grocery store if you need to pick up some tomatoes or garlic or mexican cheese.

4 stars for the food (quite decent authentic mexican tacos) 5 stars for the price (cheapy cheap $1.50 steak tacos. treat yourself for 50 cents more and try the lamb and fish). Also, most authentic mexican chicken tacos are kinda dry and unremarkable. these are actually flavorful and quite good. Also this is like a hidden middle eastern/mexican joint so walk in and there will be tunisian food in a hot bar as well. Unexpected and worth trying. I take everyone here now.

I've been wanting to try this place, after a friend who also moved from Southern California talked highly of it. My husband isn't big on tacos, but he can't (and shouldn't!) say no to his pregnant wife. ;) I've been wanting some decent fish tacos for a loooooooong time, so I had to try their fish taco! We each had their taco combo (?), which comes with 2 tacos of your choice, and a side of rice and beans. You get a choice of black or pinto beans. I had the fish taco(of course!), and a vegetarian, and my husband had the marinated pork and tongue. We both had black beans. The vegetarian taco was nothing impressive. It just had some pinto beans, onions, cilantro and lettuce. The fish taco was decent, though they grill their fish and make fish flakes, rather than having a whole piece of fish fried like Baja style, which is what I've been craving for. I just don't understand how hard it could be for a Mexican restaurant to fry the fish!! I'll still be on the lookout for decent Baja style fish tacos, but this place wasn't bad... The fish portion was pretty generous, I thought. My husband loved his tongue, but he wasn't impressed with the pork. I didn't really like their rice, and we both found the black beans to be tasting a big off... I found it a bit too salty and somehow sour, and my husband agreed as well. I hope it wasn't going bad or anything. We had it for lunch today, and as of now (past 8:00 pm), we are not sick, so it probably was just their flavoring. I also had a piece of churro as an after meal sweets, and boy, was I disappointed!! Never had a churro (or anything in that sense!) so stale! The churro practically defines the word "stale"! I don't understand how that can even be allowed to be sold!! The box was labeled: "fresh churros", but don't be fooled... Never EVER try their churros! It was so hard and stale that it could almost break my teeth! I would give this place 2 stars after this churro experience, but the tacos were fine and it was good value for the price ($4.99 for the taco combo), so I'll stick to the 3 stars for now. I hope they improve on their churros (or if they get them from elsewhere, find another vendor)!

The name sounds dicey but the food is really good. I've had both the tacos and the tamales and they were tasty. The daily special is priced well- 2 tacos and rice and beans for $5. Tres leches cake is good with a very fake but enjoyable icing. I still like Chelas better overall tho.

  • Christina B.

Best mexican food I've had in Ann Arbor. I love the special- two pork tacos, rice and beans for around five bucks. Great tres leches cake as well. Its basically a mexican bodega w/ a food counter, so very casual.

This place is great and only getting better. It far exceeds the other recently opened taco joints in town. As a true fan of authentic Mexican food, these tacos are really the best Ann Arbor has to offer.

I've been a fan of fish tacos since trying them in Mexico, so I was excited to learn they were being served right here in A2. Hands down, these fish tacos at Taco King are the worst I have tried anywhere. First, forget about a tasty slaw topping with some lime flavored sour cream-these tacos are topped only with raw onion, and the raw onion is the most plentiful item on the taco. The fish-Is this fish?-must have been cooked early in the day, then broken into crumble (like ground beef) and reheated on a griddle. One can only hope no intestines made their way into the mix. We also got a burrito. I can only describe it as "Big". We had planned to get some guac to go, but passed on that after trying the food. No reason to dine inside the store (take out is a better option) as they don't provide water for their customers and I don't even think there is a bathroom.

What a pleasant surprise. Solid Mexican food at a great price. Got 5 soft tacos, rice & beans, and guacamole for $16. Chorizo and chipotle chicken were excellent, carnitas very good but too salty. Beware the hot sauce, it's for real!! Great value, I recommend it.

  • Honest R.

NO NO NO! GO TO CHELA'S, RIGHT UP THE STREET! This place is one step above Taco Bell. Generic tacos for a surprisingly high price, given how generic they are. They are edible but boring.

  • David K.

The coolest thing about this place is that it definitely offers some things that the other restaurants do not. Specifically, I can always grab the crispy tripe (intestine) and tongue tacos and a container of guacamole. Don't knock it til you try it :P My friend did notice that the prices have gone up since the last time we were there. Guess that's something that won't change, but at around $2 per taco, still can't complain. I also notice they have fish and other specialty tacos. There's also steak fajitas on a sign as we were walking in. Always happy to stop by and get some delicious grub.

Great mexican food. We usually do the lunch special which is 4.99 and you get rice, beans, and two tacos. It's a great deal for a quick cheap lunch that has amazing flavors. We end up getting the campechana tacos which is basically just steak and chorizo but it is a great combo together. The tacos are topped with cilantro and onions and come with a side of salsa. Definitely give it a try!

I have been waiting a whole year to get something from Taco King - and it was worth thee wait. I ordered a burrito with sausage. It was the best burrito I've eaten in Ann Arbor, hands down. Fresh, tasty and reasonably priced. I look forward to trying more menu items. It was busy when I went, so the wait was a little long. There is a seating area even though it is inside a grocery store (Tienda la Libertad). the staff is friendly and hard at work. It is very casual.

I'm glad we found this place, and am glad it exists (there's nothing else Ike it around here), but it's also not the best thing ever. Here's what we liked: the tortillas, the price, the low-key atmosphere. We got chips, guacamole, 3 tacos each, and one drink each, and it came out to $16. That's a filling dinner or 2 people for cheap. So that was great. Chips -- Eh. The chips were mediocre. Why don't they serve local and jaw-droppingly good Ann Arbor Tortilla Factory chips? Guacamole -- Tasty, very avocado-y. Tacos -- Fish was my favorite and steak my least favorite, steak was my boyfriend's favorite and tongue was his least favorite (because he doesn't end up a fan of tongue, in general). But all (chicken, fish, steak, chorizo, tongue) were pretty good. Definitely better than Sabor Latino. Drinks -- Nice selection, but perhaps a bit on the expensive side (about $2)?? I was debating 3 or 4 stars, because while I enjoyed the food it didn't blow me away, but when I considered the price, 4 seemed right. We had no problem with seating or heat. There were maybe 7 tables and good air-flow. Looked like there was a cool selection of pastries, but we didn't get any. Likewise the menu was so much more than just tacos.

Taco King doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you get past the lack of air conditioning, plastic utensils and suuuuper casual staff, you will find some really great food. My table ordered a variety of burritos, tacos, a quesadilla, guacamole, chips and salsa. Everything was great. The chips were freshly made, the guacamole was green and flavorful, and all the meats were cooked and seasoned well. My mom described this place as a "local dive", which I think is accurate. Next time, I might get take out so I can enjoy the food in the comfort of my own air conditioning, but I will be back sometime soon for sure.

Good local taco place with mexican (i think..) groceries. Asked the lady how many tacos she thought I'd need, she said 4, so I bought 5. And they were AWESOME. Btw, their hot sauce is actually hot, they don't kid around.

We ordered for lunch and were told they were out of pork. No problem, please make it a chicken tamale. When the order was delivered it did not include a tamale at all and when I called back to ask what happened, I was told that we had cancelled the order. The phone was passed around to the original call taker, the guy I talked about changing the order to chicken, and he very rudely (and wrongly) insisted that I had cancelled the order. I did not. Booourns. That was my lunch!

This place may give off an "authentic" Mexican food vibe, but it is more Latin American (or something) than Mexican. And it simply does not compare to the taquerias in CA and TX. The barbacoa, for example, is a bit too dry; it is not even close to the savoriness that is standard in all the grocery stores in Texas. That said, the atmosphere is nice, the food is decent, and the price is nice. Just don't call it Mexican.

    (3)
  • E. B.

This is a little gem located inside a Latin American grocery store. High quality, fresh ingredients-- prepared with care! Definitely try the cheese quesadillas and guacamole. We also had vegetarian and lengua tacos, which were good, but not as good as the quesadillas. Bought Ann Arbor Tortilla Co. chips in the store to have with the meal. The strawberry and mandarin sodas were also tasty. A friendly atmosphere with plenty of seating.

A true throwback to California tacos...I have to rate Taco King 5 stars because I love this place! I have heard several of my Ann Arbor friends say that there are no good places for Mexican food in A2...until now! The tacos and quesadilla's are pretty damn good. The tacos are the "street food" style I have missed since living in California 3 years ago. I recommend the tacos El Pastor and the chicken quesadilla's - I have heard the tamales could use a little love, and I totally agree with another reviewer stating that they should buy their chips from A2 Tortilla Factory (those chips must have some sort of stimulant in them :)), but the Taco King chips aren't too bad. I enjoy the guac, but have read some don't care for it...I think it's worth the price. I would suggest the green hot sauce as well. I want to smuggle the green hot sauce home every time I eat there, but I disagree with one reviewer, the green sauce is the hotter of the two green/red. Taco King does get busy during lunch time and late night occasionally, but I feel it's worth the wait. I kind of enjoy the "hole in the wall" atmosphere, it feels so authentic to the LA valley. I am just excited to have a great taco place so close to my home and enjoy the bona fide ambience of Taco King and wish more people would give them a chance.

Fell about a hundred miles short of my lofty expectations. So many Yelpers talked this place up, and based on my initial visit I really have to wonder what they were smoking. I waited 20 minutes for my takeout tacos and tamale, all of which turned out to be mushy and bland. The tamale was nothing but masa, barely any filling. On top of that, the people who served me were curt (not unfriendly...just curt). The whole visit was lackluster and with Chela's around the corner serving better tacos with a smile, there's no way I'll be coming back to Taco King. Oh, and I have to add, this place prints coupons to get people in there, but the coupon price is the same price is the same as the regular price. I hate it when places do that. Boo to you, TK.

Best Tacos outside of Ypsi and Detroit in all of Michigan, but its still Michigan, no california Taqueria. Great spot though! get the green habenero hot sauce to take home too, soooo good.

Ohhh, Taco King...so happy you're 3 minutes drive from our home. Mmmm. Update! Taco King now has Air Conditioning/fans installed -- much less hot and stuffy inside, plus some new tables and chairs as well. Cheers and happy eating! What's Good: Tortillas! All tacos are double-wrapped and they are fresh, flaky, tender and good. Tacos El Pastor: Savory, flavory, melt-in-the mouth-porky-goodness. Touch of pineapple, not too sweet. Best Pastor I've had in a month of Mondays. Lengua (tongue): Tender, earthy, delish. Great with the hot garlicky green sauce, and a squeeze of lime. Barbacoa: Drier than the pork varieties, but great flavor. I prefer with the hotter salsa for moisture and zip :O) Torta: We like the chicken variety...pounded flat, coated in cornmeal (we think) and fried crisp. Then topped with pickled jalapenos, lettuce, tomato, guac, sour cream and encased in a gigantic bun. Oh man, tasty... Tamales: Pork were spicy and tasty, masa wasn't too dry and tasted fresh. Will be trying the other kinds sometime soon. Mmmm. We also tried the tamales wrapped in banana-leaf, and they were good too - much more moist than the Mexican-style tamales. What I didn't like: The guacamole -- pasty and heavy and tasted like it was mixed with mayonnaise: I like my guac with chunks of tomato, onion, cilantro, more lime etc. I also didn't like any of the chicken dishes (except for the Torta Milanese' style). Staff are very nice, great little place with great food at a fantastic price (Nice to not be charged the "this is Ann Arbor" tax. Not all of us are millionaires, and it's tacos not pate')

As a transplant from the Southwest, I can say that the tacos are truly fantastic. The tamales aren't that great, though. But for tacos, Taco King rules! Definitely the most delicious cheap meal in town. If it's busy the service can be really slow, though.

This is the closest thing to real Mexican food I've had in Ann Arbor. It's a typical no frills kind of Mexican taco joint in a small grocery store. Tacos are of decent price at $1.50. I've had the carne asada, lengua, and carnitas. The carne asada was flavorful and tender, and the lengua was really moist. The carnitas was a little dry but not too bad. I also enjoyed their San Diego Burrito with carne asada which is filled with meat, a few pop of french fries, fresh guacamole, and pico de gallo. They also deliver for $3!

This is not your corner Taco Bell (although they are at the corner from Taco Bell). These guys are as authentic to Mexican street food as can get. On my first visit, I opted to try some of their more exotic meats on my Tacos - lengua & callos - and they rocked it. The meats were well seasoned and surprisingly tender. On my second visit, I ordered a torta, and I was just surprised by the flavors. The bread was perfect and the overall dish cooked just the way I like it. I have to mention that they also have a good selection of chilled Mexican juices and soda - but I've always enjoyed my merienda with a refreshing bottle of mandarin orange Jaritos which Taco King serves right out of the fridge. Wait time to get your lunch order going may take up to 20 minutes as these dishes are prepared fresh - but definitely worth the wait. A quick walk around La Tienda will help ease the time. Maybe I'll see you there on my next visit.

This place has the best tacos in Ann Arbor, bar none. I stop whenever I drive by and pick up a bunch of al pastor tacos, which are out of control good. Nobody does al pastor like Taco King. Admittedly not the best place if you are vegetarian, there are probably better taco places in that case. They lose one star for using tons of environmentally unfriendly styrofoam packaging. It's bad enough that the to-go boxes are made of this, but they even use it for dine-in. Otherwise would not hesitate to give five stars.

    (4)
  • Adam S.

Best tacos I've had in A2 to date. Don't be afraid of the stronger flavors -- nothing was overpowering or terribly spicy. Very good quality, generous portions. I'd also recommend trying the baked goods -- the cream cheese sugared empanada was a real winner. Great with strong coffee.

  • Rebeka M.

My coworker introduced this place to me. The tacos are excellent - the meat was so good and spice was just right. The green salsa that they give you is so so so so delicious. They give you ample amounts of it, too, along with limes for the tacos. I ordered a San Diego Burrito... I just kept eating it and wishing that it would never end (that's what she said).

  • Meeta B.

Came to Taco King to get some groceries and stayed for the food. The tacos are really good . I tried to carne tacos which were plentiful with beef, onions and cilantro. The filling is plentiful and delicious. I was a fan of this taco with a bit of lime juice and some red salsa. I also had gotten the pollo (chicken) tamale- Mexican style. I wasn't a fan because it was a little drier than other tamales I had. The red salsa didn't help. So I would say come for the tacos- which are plentiful and only 1.50. Next time I will try the South American tamales and see if they're a little more moist.

I waited 45 minutes for one order of fajitas. The place wasn't busy. They also got my order wrong. The food is good, but seriously? 45 minutes? Don't come here if you're on your lunch break (I was) or if you're starving.

This place has its quirks for sure. From the moody staff, to its leaking ceiling, and to the slow service, you'd expect me to give this place 1 star. The secret is, I can't...the pastor tacos are miraculous and the best I've had in the Michigan! They are very flavorful and don't need any additional sauce. I've had other offerings from the tacos and burritos but they just don't do it for me. Do yourself a favor, and order 3 pastor tacos, and grab a drink; you'll be happy. Some naysayers may complain that the staff are not Latin American, I could care less...feed me yummies and I'll be happy.

Good tacos, but soooo slow every time. 45 minutes for three tacos and a churro. I would order from here much more often if they were fast.

Great prices. Interesting taco meat choices. I dont like the steak (dry and cubed) but the Lamb, Tounge and Intestine are delicious. As long as you dont expect them to take your order quickly, you will probably be pleasantly suprised by the food!

Food is great- truly... Get the quesadilla with Campechana. HOWEVER- must give 2 stars due to one major flaw: beware delivery. Not only does the order take twice as long to arrive as they quote you (minimum), they frequently mess up the items contained therein.

Great prices. Interesting taco meat choices. I dont like the steak (dry and cubed) but the Lamb, Tounge and Intestine are delicious. As long as you dont expect them to take your order quickly, you will probably be pleasantly suprised by the food!

  • S G.

Best mexican food I've had in Ann Arbor. I love the special- two pork tacos, rice and beans for around five bucks. Great tres leches cake as well. Its basically a mexican bodega w/ a food counter, so very casual.

  • Julie S.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
